King Charles III Faces Gardening Staff Exodus at Highgrove House

Eleven out of 12 gardeners have left Highgrove House estate since 2022, according to reports. The staff allegedly cited under-resourcing and struggled to meet the King’s demands. One staffer reportedly said they were ‘under-resourced and constantly struggling to fulfill the King’s request.’ The situation has led to physical injuries and low morale.

The King’s Foundation has defended the staff turnover, stating it is ‘well below’ the national average. A spokesperson for the foundation emphasized the importance of staff welfare and cited high satisfaction rates from annual staff surveys. They also noted that the garden has seen many positive developments since 2022, including increased operating profits and the establishment of an education facility.

According to the foundation, only one grievance was reported between 2024 and 2025 out of nearly 500 staff. The gardeners have also received annual pay raises totaling between 15% and 19% since 2022, aligning with national average increases. The foundation also mentioned the garden has welcomed over 40,000 visitors annually.

King Charles has resided at Highgrove House since 1980. He raised his children, Prince Harry and Prince William, with his then-wife Princess Diana. The estate is now shared with Queen Camilla.
