A 29-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history has been indicted on 74 felony charges after allegedly ramming his Nissan Versa into a crowd outside a California nightclub, leaving 37 injured individuals, eight with severe injuries. The incident has sparked widespread concern over public safety and the effectiveness of parole and mental health laws. The driver, identified as Fernando Ramirez, was on parole at the time of the event and has a history of violent incidents, including a 2019 conviction for assault. Authorities are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent bystander involvement in the incident.
LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed grave concerns over the incident, stating, ‘We understand that this brazen act has shaken the community and, but for the good grace of God, this could have been a mass casualty incident.’ Hochman noted that Ramirez’s vehicle, driving at 2 a.m., targeted a crowd of pedestrians waiting to enter the Hollywood nightclub. The victims were predominantly women, and the assailant’s vehicle also damaged a food vending cart and a valet stand.
Bystanders reportedly pulled Ramirez from his disabled vehicle, during which an altercation escalated. A man pulled a gun and shot Ramirez, prompting police to search for the suspect. The incident has drawn further attention due to Ramirez’s extensive criminal history, which includes at least 11 cases from 2014 to the present, ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. The 2014 charge was gang-related, and Ramirez faces unresolved cases from 2022 and 2024. If convicted on the charges related to the car ramming, Ramirez could face life in prison.
