According to recent reports from YASNO, the energy supplier responsible for Kyiv’s electricity distribution, the first half of 2025 saw a notable increase in the number of residents and businesses paying off outstanding electricity bills to restore their power supply. The total amount paid by these customers reached 29 million hryvnia, highlighting the growing financial pressure on households and corporations affected by the disconnections.
YASNO emphasized that while the disconnections were necessary to ensure the continued operation of the power grid and to prevent further financial losses, they had a significant impact on the daily lives of Kyiv residents. Many of those affected were small businesses and low-income families that struggled to meet their energy costs, especially during the colder months of winter and spring.
The energy supplier also noted that the situation has sparked a debate about the effectiveness of current debt collection practices. Some experts argue that a more flexible approach, such as installment plans or financial assistance programs, could help ease the burden on affected consumers while still ensuring the stability of the energy sector.
As the country continues to navigate economic challenges, the issue of unpaid electricity bills remains a pressing concern for both residents and energy providers. The 29 million hryvnia paid in the first half of 2025 is a clear indication of the scale of the problem and the financial strain it places on the population.
