Netherlands and OSCE Members Demand Independent Probe into Alleged Russian Torture of Ukrainian POWs

The Netherlands and 40 other OSCE member states have formally called for an independent investigation into the torture and mistreatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces, Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp announced July 24. The decision comes amid increased global scrutiny on Russia’s conduct in the war in Ukraine, with multiple countries expressing concern over alleged war crimes. The OSCE, which includes 57 member states, is now expected to consider the request for an independent probe, potentially leading to formal sanctions against Russia if evidence of torture is confirmed.

The call for an investigation reflects a broader international push to hold Russia accountable for its actions in the conflict. Dutch Foreign Minister Veldkamp emphasized the importance of transparency and justice, stating that the investigation aims to uncover the full extent of the alleged mistreatment of Ukrainian POWs. He also highlighted the need for the international community to support Ukraine’s right to seek justice for its citizens. The Netherlands, as a key NATO ally, has been vocal in its support for Ukraine, and this move aligns with its broader strategy to apply pressure on Russia through diplomatic and political means.
