Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed two laws extending the state of martial law in Ukraine and implementing a general mobilization, according to the Verkhovna Rada. The measures are part of the ongoing response to the Russian invasion, which has been ongoing since February 24, 2022.
The law on extending martial law (No. 4525-IX) was enacted to maintain the legal framework for the ongoing conflict, allowing the government to enforce extraordinary measures such as increased military mobilization, resource allocation for defense, and the suspension of certain civil liberties. The general mobilization law (No. 4525-IX) aims to systematically activate the country’s military reserves, ensuring a steady supply of troops and equipment for the front lines.
These legislative actions were taken following a series of cabinet meetings and consultations with military and security advisors. Zelenskyy has emphasized that the extended martial law and general mobilization are essential for sustaining the war effort and protecting the nation’s sovereignty. The measures have also been aligned with international support, including military aid from the United States, Ukraine’s neighbors, and other global partners, which continue to be critical to the country’s defense capabilities.
