Blindfolded Dart Throws Guide Canadian Man’s Global Travel Odyssey
Sorin Mihailovici, a Canadian entrepreneur, has transformed spontaneous travel into a unique global adventure by throwing darts at a world map while blindfolded, visiting countries based on where the dart lands. Since 2012, he has explored over 50 locations, including the North Pole, Indonesia, and Iraq, and has made these journeys the basis of an Amazon Prime show called ‘Travel by Dart.’
Mihailovici began his journey by visiting far-flung places like the North Pole, Russia, and Indonesia, originally taking annual trips but now traveling to up to 16 destinations a year. Initially funded by his savings, the trips later received support from corporate partnerships. He doesn’t travel to the exact spot where his dart lands but begins in the country’s capital, as some nations like Uruguay are too small for precise targeting.
His favorite countries so far include Iceland, Argentina, and Thailand, while Madagascar was his least favorite due to a ‘misconception’ shaped by an animated movie and locals who ‘didn’t have the best intentions.’ He praised Vietnam for its cuisine, calling it ‘the best street food I’ve ever had,’ noting it was the cheapest destination he’s traveled to. On the other hand, some countries like Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Maldives can be quite expensive.
Mihailovici’s travel show, ‘Travel by Dart,’ features footage from his trips, which he began editing during the COVID pandemic. He eventually sold the concept to a distribution company, creating a season of 13 episodes for Amazon Prime. In a recent trip to Iraq, he was surprised by the safety, stating, ‘nothing happened to me. We went to Baghdad and Babylon. It was great.’ He admitted to being ‘a little scared’ about going to Iraq due to the political situation, but was determined to follow through with wherever the dart suggested he go.
Despite the unpredictable nature of his travels, Mihailovici plans to continue expanding his travel list, with Australia and Spain being his next dream destinations. He aims to throw another dart in August to determine his next destination. With over 50 countries visited, including Easter Island, Bermuda, Portugal, Cuba, Thailand, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, Iceland, Greece, Japan, Antarctica, Germany, Vietnam, India, Turkey, South Korea, and Yemen, Mihailovici has turned his passion into a unique form of entertainment and travel exploration.
