UNESCO Provides $70 Million in Aid to Ukraine Since Full-Scale Invasion
At the height of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, UNESCO has committed over 70 million US dollars in support of the nation’s urgent humanitarian and cultural needs. Speaking to Interfax-Ukraine, Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, the Head of the UNESCO Office in Ukraine, outlined the organization’s multifaceted response to the full-scale invasion.
The funds are directed toward various initiatives, including the protection of cultural heritage sites, education programs for displaced children, and the restoration of critical infrastructure affected by the war. Bardeschi emphasized the importance of safeguarding Ukraine’s cultural identity amidst the devastation, stating, “Cultural heritage is not just a legacy but a living part of our society.”
In addition to financial contributions, UNESCO has been collaborating with local and international stakeholders to ensure the aid is effectively distributed. Bardeschi highlighted the challenges of operating in conflict zones, noting the organization’s commitment to neutrality and transparency in its operations.
The international community continues to monitor UNESCO’s efforts closely, with many expressing hope that the aid will alleviate some of the suffering faced by civilians. As the war enters its second year, the need for sustained international support remains critical.
