European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has announced that Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has taken steps to restore the independence of key anti-corruption institutions, including the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). This decision follows a previous ruling that had raised concerns about the bodies’ operational autonomy. Kos stressed that the restoration of independence is a critical step in Ukraine’s fight against systemic corruption.
The European Commission has been closely monitoring Ukraine’s progress in implementing anti-corruption reforms as part of its enlargement process. The reinstatement of NABU and SAPO’s independence is seen as a positive development, although challenges remain in ensuring full compliance with EU standards. Kos reiterated that combating corruption is not only a national imperative but also a priority for the European Union, highlighting the importance of these institutions in maintaining public trust and legal integrity.
