Ukraine and Romania have announced plans to open the Bila Tserkva – Sighetu Marmației border crossing by the end of 2024, utilizing temporary infrastructure to accommodate passenger car traffic. According to Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development Serhiy Derkach, this move is part of broader efforts to enhance cross-border connectivity and support regional trade.
During a recent meeting with Romania’s State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ionel Scrioșteanu, Derkach emphasized the significance of the project in fostering economic and diplomatic relations between the two countries. Both nations are working to ensure that the temporary infrastructure meets the necessary safety and operational standards for passenger vehicles.
The border crossing is located in the region of Bila Tserkva, which is in the Kyiv Oblast of Ukraine, and Sighetu Marmației, a town in Romania’s Maramureș County. This strategic location facilitates trade and travel between Eastern and Central Europe, making it a vital link in the region’s transportation network. The temporary infrastructure is expected to be operational by the end of the year, with full-scale infrastructure development continuing in the coming months.
Romania and Ukraine have been working closely to improve cross-border cooperation, especially in light of the ongoing challenges posed by the war in Ukraine. The opening of the border crossing is seen as a positive step toward strengthening regional integration and supporting economic recovery. Both countries have expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties and ensuring the smooth operation of the border crossing.
