Meteorite Fragment Older Than Earth Found in Georgia Home

A meteorite fragment that crashed through the roof of a Georgia home in June has been identified as billions of years old and predates the Earth, according to a geology professor. The incident, which occurred near Atlanta on June 26, has sparked significant scientific interest due to the fragment’s extraordinary age.

Scott Harris, a geologist at the University of Georgia, explained that the meteorite, which originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, struck the home with such force that it created a crater in the floor. Harris, who was immediately alerted to the incident, examined the damage and noted that the fragment had passed through the roof, an air duct, and insulation before leaving a 10-foot-high ceiling and a centimeter-and-a-half crater in the floor.

Harris described the meteorite’s impact as having been so intense that it left a hole in the floor roughly the size of a large cherry tomato.
