Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has confirmed that Ukraine plans to open a consulate in Romanian Sighetu Marmației by the end of 2023. The announcement was made during a press briefing, where Sybiha emphasized the importance of strengthening diplomatic ties with Romania and providing more comprehensive support for Ukrainian citizens living in the region.
The consulate is expected to serve as a key hub for consular services, including passport and visa assistance, legal aid, and information about Ukrainian interests in Romania. Sybiha highlighted that the move is part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to expand its diplomatic presence in Europe, especially in areas with significant Ukrainian communities.
While the exact number of Ukrainian citizens in Sighetu Marmației has not been disclosed, the government has stated that the consulate will also act as a liaison for Ukrainian diaspora organizations and promote cultural and economic ties between the two countries. Sybiha reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to its European integration agenda and its desire to deepen cooperation with Romania in various sectors, including trade and security.
