Kyivstar and Ukraine’s Digital Transformation Minister Test Starlink Direct to Cell Tech in Zhytomyr

CEO of the largest Ukrainian telecommunications operator Kyivstar, Oleksandr Komarov, and First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov, exchanged the first messages sent directly from smartphones via the Starlink Direct to Cell satellite on Tuesday in a field near Zhytomy, demonstrating to journalists a new technology in test mode that will be launched for all the company’s clients this fall.

The test, conducted in the outskirts of Zhytomyr, marks a pivotal step for Kyivstar as the company continues to expand its digital infrastructure to support both civilian and governmental operations. The collaboration between Kyivstar and the Ministry of Digital Transformation underscores Ukraine’s commitment to advancing its technological capabilities at a critical juncture in its history.

Starlink Direct to Cell technology is designed to provide reliable and secure connectivity, particularly in areas where traditional cellular networks may be disrupted. This advancement is especially significant for Ukraine as it navigates ongoing challenges and seeks to strengthen its digital resilience.

With the successful test, Kyivstar is positioned to roll out the technology to its clients by autumn, enhancing broadband access across the country and bolstering communication systems essential for both everyday users and critical infrastructure.
