Zelenskyy Warns Against Hope as Trump-Putin Summit Approaches

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed skepticism about Russia’s intentions to end the war in Ukraine, stating there is ‘no sign’ of such preparation as the upcoming Trump-Putin summit approaches. The summit, set for Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, is expected to address the possibility of a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

Zelenskyy emphasized the need for coordinated actions from Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and other peace-seeking nations to pressure Russia into a peaceful resolution. He wrote on X, ‘This war must be ended. Pressure must be exerted on Russia for the sake of a just peace. Ukraine’s and our partners’ experience must be used to prevent deception by Russia.’ He also added, ‘At present, there is no sign that the Russians are preparing to end the war. Our coordinated efforts and joint actions – of Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and all countries that seek peace – can definitely compel Russia to make peace.’

Meanwhile, Trump has described the meeting as a ‘feel-out’ session to assess the feasibility of a ceasefire, though he has not yet offered concrete proposals. Despite his previous optimism, Trump has admitted to feeling ‘frustrated’ by the lack of progress in previous calls with Putin, highlighting the high stakes of the upcoming summit. He told reporters, ‘I’m not going to make a deal. It’s not up to me to make a deal. I think a deal should be made for both [Putin and Zelenskyy]. I’d like to see a ceasefire. I’d like to see the best deal that could be made for both parties. You know, it takes two to tango.’

Zelenskyy also wrote on X last week, ‘The path to peace for Ukraine must be determined together with Ukraine – this is fundamental. It is important that joint approaches and a shared vision work toward genuine peace. A consolidated position. Ceasefire. End of occupation. End of war.’

This summit is set to top Trump’s agenda this week as the war in Ukraine takes center stage. Trump has made it clear that the main focus will be on whether a ceasefire in Ukraine is even possible. The outcome of these talks could have significant implications for the ongoing conflict and international relations.
