DC’s 100th Homicide of Year Sparks Concern as Police Hunt for Killer

A 33-year-old man was shot and killed in Northwest D.C. on Monday evening, marking the 100th homicide of the year and the first since the Trump administration assumed control of the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident occurred in the 1200 block of 12th Street NW in Logan Circle, where officers from the Third District responded to reports of gunfire. The victim, identified as Tymark Wells, was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The killing comes just blocks from the scenes of two other recent shootings, including those of a congressional intern and a former government official, both of which were cited by Trump as examples of violent crime. Trump had previously criticized the Metropolitan Police Department for failing to address rising crime rates in the city, and his administration’s decision to federalize the agency has been a major point of contention. The Washington, D.C., City Council has criticized the federal takeover of the MPD, calling it an ‘unwarranted intrusion on local authority,’ and has called for the National Guard’s deployment to be reconsidered. ‘Violent crime in the District is at the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unwarranted because there is no Federal emergency,’ the council stated in a joint statement.

The MPD is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Monday’s shooting. Anyone with knowledge of the incident is urged to call (202) 727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411. Meanwhile, the White House and the MPD have not yet issued official statements on the incident, though Fox News Digital has reached out to both for comment. The case has raised questions about the effectiveness of the federal takeover and its impact on public safety in the nation’s capital.
