Utah Police Officers Killed in Domestic Disturbance Response: ‘Definitely Heroes’

Two Utah police officers, Sgt. Lee Sorensen and Officer Eric Estrada, were killed in a shooting during a domestic disturbance call in Tremonton. The incident occurred when an armed suspect opened fire on the officers, who were responding to multiple 911 calls. Police Chief Chad Reyes described the officers as heroes, highlighting their dedication to their families and communities.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night when police received several 911 hang-up calls from a home in the Tremonton neighborhood. Officer Sorensen was the first to arrive at the scene and began speaking to someone at the home when an armed man came out with a gun, according to authorities.

The suspect opened fire, fatally shooting Sorensen. A second officer, Eric Estrada, rushed to help the first officer but was immediately fired upon and killed by the same suspect. A deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office also responded and was shot while still inside his vehicle with his service dog.

Both officers were described as dedicated public servants. Sorensen, who served in law enforcement for 17 years, had recently been promoted to sergeant, with a swearing-in ceremony planned for Friday. Estrada had joined the Tremonton Police Department earlier this year and was described as a loving father and husband who cherished his family.

After the officers were killed, bystanders persuaded the suspect to put down his weapon, and up to 50 officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene. SWAT teams were called in to clear the home and ensure no further threats. The suspect surrendered and was charged with aggravated murder. Authorities have not yet released his name.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event, calling it ‘a terrible and tragic night.’ He ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the officers, emphasizing the state’s mourning for their loss. The incident has sparked outpourings of grief from the local community and law enforcement agencies, with many expressing their admiration for the officers’ bravery and dedication.
