Eileen Gu, the controversial US-born Chinese skier, has been reported to have suffered a ‘terrible accident’ in training in New Zealand. According to a report, the skier, who represented China in the 2022 Winter Olympics, was involved in a serious accident that required her to be taken to the hospital on a stretcher. Bystanders at the Cardrona Alpine Resort told the South China Morning Post that Gu suffered critical injuries. Gu posted a health update on her Weibo account, stating that the accident was due to a human error. Gu won two gold medals and a silver in the 2022 Olympics, sparking controversy over her choice to compete for China instead of the United States. Despite her mixed heritage, Gu was reported to have become a Chinese citizen at the age of 15, according to Chinese state media. However, dual citizenship is not allowed in China, meaning she would have had to renounce her US citizenship. Gu, who has lived in China for a significant portion of her life, plans to compete for China again in the 34th Winter Olympics in 2026.
