The U.S. Department of Education has accused George Mason University of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by implementing what it deems ‘unlawful DEI policies.’ The Office for Civil Rights initiated an investigation into the university’s hiring and promotion practices after complaints from professors claimed preferential treatment was given to underrepresented groups. The complaint specifically targets President Gregory Washington’s guidance prioritizing diversity initiatives over qualifications.
Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor emphasized that the university’s actions constituted intentional racial discrimination. The Office for Civil Rights has proposed a resolution agreement requiring the university to commit to complying with Title, VI and issue an apology. If the university fails to agree, it risks losing federal funding.
The Trump administration has previously cut federal funds from other universities accused of similar issues, including Harvard, Columbia, and the University of California, Los Angeles. The Trump-appointed Judge struck down anti-DEI measures from the Education Department, highlighting the political dimensions of the case.
