Chicago has once again been named the most bedbug-infested city in the U.S., according to Orkin’s latest report, which analyzed treatment data from commercial and residential areas across the country. This marks the fifth consecutive year the city has held the top spot in the company’s annual list, highlighting the persistent challenge of bedbug infestations. The report, covering metro areas from May 15, 2024, to May 14, 2025, underscores the resilience of bedbugs and their ability to spread through travel and personal belongings.
Cleveland, Ohio, came in second for the second year in a row, followed by Detroit, Michigan, and Los Angeles, California. Orkin’s experts emphasized that bedbugs are some of the most difficult pests to control, often surviving in homes, hotels, and other environments for extended periods. Ben Hottel, an entomologist with Orkin based in Atlanta, warned that the pests are highly adaptable and can thrive in nearly any setting, making early detection and prevention crucial.
The report also highlighted a notable increase in bedbug activity in Hartford, Connecticut, which rose from 48th to 35th place in the rankings. This significant jump suggests a growing problem in the region, although it is not yet among the top cities. Meanwhile, major cities like Charlotte, Philadelphia, and New York City saw a decrease in reported infestations, though they still remain above the national average.
Orkin provided several practical tips for preventing bedbug infestations, including regularly inspecting luggage and personal belongings for signs of the pests, keeping luggage elevated away from beds, and using high heat to kill any bedbugs that may be present in clothing. The company stressed the importance of vigilance, as even small infestations can quickly become a major problem if not addressed promptly.
