Ukrainian Drones Target Russian Airbase, Destroy Four Fighter Jets

Ukraine’s General Staff reported that Ukrainian drones struck an airfield in Volgograd Oblast, Russia, on June 27, destroying four Su-34 fighter jets and damaging two others. The operation was carried out by the Special Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in collaboration with other military units, according to the General Staff. The attack also caused a fire in the airfield’s technical and operational unit, a facility where combat aircraft are serviced and repaired.

Volgograd Oblast, situated approximately 900 kilometers (560 miles) southeast of Moscow, is a strategically significant location for Russia’s military infrastructure. According to the General Staff, Russia employs such aircraft to conduct bombing raids on Ukraine, particularly to drop guided aerial bombs. The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify these claims.

As Russia intensifies its aerial attacks on Ukraine and the civilian death toll continues to rise, Ukraine has escalated its drone attacks on Russian territory. This recent surge in strikes aims to disrupt airport operations, overwhelm air defenses, and apply pressure on the Russian population. The strategy underscores Ukraine’s efforts to shift the conflict’s focus and challenge Russian military capabilities beyond its borders.

The attack marks another escalation in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the evolving tactics and intensifying hostilities between the two nations. With the situation remaining fluid, the potential for further escalation and the impact on regional stability remain significant concerns.
