Patriots Acquire Tommy DeVito Off Waivers After Giants Release

The New England Patriots claimed fan favorite quarterback Tommy DeVito off waivers Wednesday, just a day after he was released by the New York Giants. This move comes amid significant changes to the Giants’ quarterback room, which saw the addition of Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency and the drafting of Jaxson Dart in the 2025 NFL Draft.

DeVito, 27, was signed by the Patriots as their third-string quarterback behind starter Drake Maye and backup Josh Dobbs. The Giants had previously waived him, citing the need to streamline their roster following the offseason overhaul. Despite being cut, DeVito quickly found a new opportunity with the Patriots, who see value in adding depth at the quarterback position.

DeVito’s career has been marked by both highs and lows. In 2,023, he led the Giants to the national spotlight as ‘Tommy Cutlets,’ completing 64% of his passes for 1,101 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. However, the following season saw a decline in performance, with only 70.5% completion rate and no touchdowns in his two starts.

Despite his struggles, DeVito’s preseason performance has been promising. He completed 30 of 38 passes for 323 yards with four touchdowns and one interception across three games, including a standout performance in the Giants’ game against the Patriots, where he orchestrated a 42-10 victory with 17 of 20 completions, 198 yards, and three touchdowns.

Patriots coach Mike Vrabel highlighted the value of acquiring DeVito, emphasizing the importance of strength in the roster. He also acknowledged the strategic advantage of having Ryan Cowden, the team’s vice president of player personnel, who had prior experience with the Giants, providing insight into DeVito’s background and potential.

The transaction highlights the fluid nature of NFL rosters and the importance of adaptability in building a competitive team. As the Patriots look to develop depth and competition at the quarterback position, DeVito’s signing adds another layer to their roster strategy.
