Leaders Gather in Tianjin for SCO Summit, Address Global Tensions
World leaders are converging in Tianjin for the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, the largest multilateral forum in the region. Chinese President Xi Jinping has welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the opening of the summit, which will bring together over 2,000 participants including more than 20 heads of state and representatives from ten international organizations.
The summit, set to conclude on September 1, occurs amidst a backdrop of escalating global tensions. From the ongoing Ukraine conflict to the Israel-Gaza war and escalating trade disputes sparked by US President Donald Trump’s recent tariff policies, the international community faces complex challenges. The SCO summit will address these concerns through discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, and the advancement of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and green development.
Puhtin’s schedule includes meetings with Xi Jinping on trade, security, and the broader implications of the Ukraine conflict with the United States in the coming days. He is also set to attend events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, a significant historical milestone. Additionally, Mr. Putin is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with a range of leaders, including Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iran’s Masoud Pezeshkian, further solidifying regional alliances.
