Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., called for an assault weapons ban following the deadly Minneapolis Catholic school shooting that killed two children and injured 17 others. Omar appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, where she advocated for a comprehensive approach to addressing the crisis, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect children and communities.
The shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic School during a Mass on Wednesday morning. Federal authorities confirmed that Robin Westman—also known as Robert Westman—was the suspected shooter. Westman, believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, took the lives of two schoolchildren and injured 35 other people. The incident has sparked an outpouring of grief and anger across the community, with many calling for stricter gun control measures.
Omar stressed the importance of making sure that Congress is focused on finding real solutions, rather than engaging in partisan debates. She argued that this moment should not be used as an opportunity for political posturing, but rather as a chance to bring about meaningful change.
