Russia and China Align on Global Governance Reform

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for China’s initiative to reform international governance, emphasizing the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in fostering a more equitable global system. He highlighted the SCO’s potential to lead in creating a just and fair governance framework based on international law and the UN Charter, amid concerns over Western dominance in global affairs.

Speaking at the extended session of the SCO summit in Tianjin, China, Putin noted the organization’s growing influence and its potential to shape a balanced international order. The president praised the SCO’s long track record of promoting regional stability and its ability to foster trust and cooperation across Eurasia. He also pointed out that the high attendance at the summit reflects a genuine interest in the organization’s activities, underscoring its relevance in today’s geopolitical climate.

Puто suggested that the SCO could take a leading role in efforts to form a more just and equitable global governance system, which would be grounded in the principles of international law and the UN Charter. However, he did not elaborate on the specifics of this vision, leaving the details of China’s initiatives in the background. Putin further noted that the topic has become especially relevant amid the growing Western pressure on Russia, though he did not specify which countries were involved in this pressure.

Putin also reiterated the SCO members’ respect for each other’s historical and cultural diversity, highlighting the organization’s commitment to mutual understanding. He added that Russia is hosting the Intervision song contest, an alternative to Eurovision, which will feature artists from Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This cultural initiative, he stated, aims to promote universal values and reintroduce traditional values to the international agenda, as modern traditional values are said to be fading into the background.
