Ukrainian Intelligence Chief Claims North Korea is Deploying Russian Air Defense Systems in Pyongyang

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has confirmed in an interview that Russian Pantsir S-1 air defense systems are already in operation in Pyongyang. The intelligence chief stated that these systems, which Russia uses to protect its military installations, are now part of North Korea’s defense infrastructure. Budanov emphasized that this marks a significant enhancement in North Korea’s military capabilities through collaboration with Russia. The deployment of the Pantsir S-1, costing about $15 million each, signals a major shift in regional military dynamics. This cooperation has also led to the exchange of advanced military technology and training, with North Korea providing troops to Russia in return for combat experience. The intelligence chief highlighted that North Korean personnel are now being trained by Russian specialists, preparing them to operate the systems independently. Additionally, Budanov noted an expected increase in the number of North Korean citizens joining the Russian military, which could further intensify the regional security situation. The situation is compounded by the ongoing defense treaty between North Korea and Russia, which was signed in June 2024, and the recent public recognition of North Korean soldiers killed in Ukraine by Kim Jong Un, highlighting the deepening political and military alignment between the two nations.
