Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged the bravery of North Korean soldiers who aided Russia in defending the Kurs, which was under attack from Ukrainian forces, during a high-level meeting in China with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The commendation came as part of a bilateral discussion held at the Diaoyutai state guest house in Beijing, following a ceremonial event marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Putin began the meeting by highlighting the ‘special, trusting, and friendly’ nature of Russia-North Korea relations, attributing this to the North Korean forces’ role in the recent defense of the Kursk Region.
In a speech that underscored the importance of their alliance, Putin stated, ‘I would like to point out that your soldiers fought courageously and heroically… we will never forget the sacrifices made by your armed forces and the families of your servicemen,’ adding that the Russian people are deeply grateful for the North Koreans’ contribution to the ‘joint fight against modern neo-Nazism.’ Kim Jong-un responded by affirming that Pyongyang considers it a ‘brotherly duty’ to support Moscow and pledged to carry out ‘a joint struggle’ with Russia under the provisions of their mutual defense treaty.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which became effective in December 2024, has strengthened military cooperation between the two countries. Kim emphasized the significance of the bilateral relationship, expressing confidence in Russia’s ability to achieve its ‘just and sacred cause’ of defending its sovereignty and security interests. The meeting reflects the deepening strategic alignment between North Korea and Russia, both of which view their alliance as crucial to countering Western influence and maintaining regional stability.
