Collin Morikawa Confronts Reporter Over Controversial Quote

PGA Tour star Collin Morikawa had a contentious exchange with Golfweek reporter Adam Schupak during a press conference prior to the Rocket Classic on Wednesday. Morikawa, a two-time major champion, expressed frustration that a quote from his recent cadd, which he had given in the context of his pro-am partners, was included in Schupak’s article. The reporter had quoted Morikawa as saying, ‘Ask me anything you want in my press conference later. I’m with my pro-am partners now,’ which Morikawa claimed was misinterpreted as a dismissal of the reporter’s questions.

The incident occurred as Schupak was writing a story about Morikawa’s caddie change, which had been a topic of discussion in the golf community. Morikawa took issue with how the quote was presented, stating that it made him sound unprofessional and downplayed the significance of his pro-am partners. He emphasized that the individuals were important to the Rocket Classic event and the community, and that the reporter’s use of the quote was disrespectful. Morikawa was clear that he was not there to dictate how the media should perform their jobs, but he did not want to be portrayed negatively.

Schupak, in an effort to clarify the situation, stated that he believed he was giving Morikawa credit for focusing on his pro-am partners. However, Morikawa’s interpretation differed. He believed the quote could be read in a way that suggested he was avoiding the media, which he found offensive. After Morikawa’s comments, Schupak revised the article, removing the original quote and replacing it with a different one that better aligned with Morikawa’s intentions.

This incident is not the first time Morikawa has sparked controversy with the media this season. His remarks during The Masters had also drawn attention. Despite the recent confrontation, Morikawa is currently performing well at the Rocket Classic, held at the Detroit Golf Club, where he is tied for 35th place after shooting three-under par for the day. Min Woo Lee leads the tournament after a strong first round performance of nine-under par.
