Inside United Airlines’ 24/7 Operations Hub: Thousands of Flights Managed Daily

United Airlines’ Network Operations Center (NOC) near Chicago is a critical hub for managing the airline’s vast global network, overseeing nearly 5,000 flights each day. This 24/7 command center houses over 2,000 employees across 26 departments, ensuring that all aspects of flight operations are monitored and coordinated with precision. While passengers may not directly interact with this behind-the-scenes team, their work is essential in maintaining the smooth and safe operation of United Airlines’ fleet.

The NOC serves as the nerve center for United Airlines, where specialists handle everything from flight dispatch and crew scheduling to meteorology and aircraft maintenance coordination. According to Harel Magaritz, managing director of NOC daily operations, the goal is to ensure that flights stay on track, even in the face of unexpected challenges. “What you see in front of you is really where our global operations is controlled,” Magaritz explained during a behind-the-scenes tour of the center. “It’s about knowing that anything around the world can happen at any given moment.”

One of the most critical teams within the NOC is the in-house meteorology department, led by Nathan Polderman, the senior manager of meteorology. His team is responsible for issuing weather forecasts across United’s network and flagging any events that might delay or ground flights. “In some cases, we’ve had two or three hubs with thunderstorm activity in the same day,” Polderman said. “So you can imagine that makes the weather team very busy.” The forecasts provided by the meteorology team are essential for flight dispatchers, who use this information to decide how or if a flight should proceed.

Magaritz also highlighted the importance of real-time updates from airports across the country to maintain seamless operations. “United officials also emphasized how essential it is to receive real-time updates from airports across the country in order to keep operations seamless across the network,” he added. The coordination at the NOC is a testament to the complex yet crucial role that behind-the-scenes operations play in the airline industry, ensuring that millions of passengers can travel with confidence in their journeys.
