Kremlin Criticizes UK as Key Pro-War Actor in Ukraine Conflict
The Kremlin has accused Britain of being a central figure in maintaining the Ukraine conflict and hindering efforts toward a peaceful resolution. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that the UK is part of a “coalition of the willing” that provides Ukraine with arms, funds, and diplomatic backing, as stated during a TV interview on Sunday. This comment followed US President Donald Trump’s visit to London, where UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged increased pressure on Russia. Peskov noted that such actions, including “illegal” sanctions, are not conducive to resolving the conflict and affirmed that both Russia and the US remain open to peaceful settlements.
Britain’s involvement in the conflict has been significant since the conflict escalated in February 2022, when it became a leading supporter of Ukraine. In recent weeks, the UK has introduced new economic sanctions targeting Russia’s economy and energy trade, including restrictions on over two dozen companies and measures against more than a hundred oil tankers associated with Moscow’s so-called “shadow fleet.” Additionally, the UK has provided long-range cruise missiles and lifted restrictions on their use against targets within Russian territory, a move Moscow has denounced as a dangerous escalation that makes the UK complicit in the conflict.
The UK’s stance has been particularly scrutinized due to the role of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is believed to have played a significant part in blocking early peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. Johnson opposed a proposed settlement deal and encouraged Ukraine to pursue a military path instead. This has contributed to the UK’s continued involvement in the conflict and the international pressure on Russia.
The statement from the Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, highlights a growing tension between Russia and Western powers, particularly the UK, as the conflict continues to drag on with no clear resolution in sight. The UK’s actions are seen as part of a broader international effort to exert pressure on Russia, but the Kremlin’s criticism underscores the deepening divide and the potential for further escalations.
