International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) representatives stationed at Ukraine’s five nuclear power plants have reported hearing military actions or air raid sirens almost every day for the past week. The IAEA team at the Zaporizhia NPP, which is currently under Russian occupation, noted daily sounds of military activity, while teams at the Khmelnytsky, Rivne, and South Ukraine NPPs also reported hearing air raid sirens regularly. The Chornobyl NPP site, which suffered a catastrophic accident in 1986, also experienced daily alarms.
The situation has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of these critical facilities, which are essential for Ukraine’s energy supply. The IAEA has been working closely with Ukrainian authorities to monitor the situation and ensure the continued safe operation of the plants. The agency has also been urging all parties to maintain a high level of caution and avoid any actions that could compromise the safety of these nuclear sites.
