Portland is preparing to take a significant step in amplifying its commitment to sanctuary policies by introducing new legislation aimed at curtailing cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The city’s Community and Public Safety Committee is set to review an ordinance that would transform existing 2017 resolutions into binding legal protections. This proposed measure would prohibit city agencies from using municipal resources to enforce federal immigration laws and ban city employees, contractors, and police from assisting federal immigration officers in investigations or detentions. The ordinance would also block the sharing of information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) unless compelled by a court order. The city’s pledge to uphold the dignity and respect of all individuals, regardless of immigration status, is emphasized in the ordinance. Additionally, it mandates training for all city employees on sanctuary policies and designates all municipal buildings as ‘Sanctuary City Safe Spaces.’ The proposal has garnered support from the majority of the city’s residents, with only one opposing testimony, highlighting the city’s progressive stance.
