A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fire at a Florida synagogue that police are investigating as both an arson incident and a hate crime. Blake Richard Hoover, 31, of Charlotte County, was charged with arson and criminal mischief for the blaze that broke out at the Chabad of Charlotte County synagogue in Punta Gorda on Friday. The fire, which broke out at the rear of the building, was quickly contained by firefighters, with no injuries reported. Investigators confirmed the use of an accelerant to start the fire and the presence of the letter ‘J’ spray-painted on the property. The incident, occurring days before the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah, has been deemed a hate crime.
Hoover’s family members played a key role in providing critical leads to authorities. One family member initially sent a tip to a detective, suggesting that Hoover may have been responsible for the fire. Shortly thereafter, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received another tip from a different family member, raising suspicions about Hoover’s involvement. The information led to a coordinated effort between law enforcement agencies, resulting in searches of Hoover’s home, vehicle, and electronic devices. After speaking with Hoover and witnesses, police obtained and executed search warrants, leading to his arrest and subsequent detention at the Charlotte County Jail.
Punta Gorda Police Chief Pamela Smith expressed profound concern over the incident, stating that the Jewish community’s safety and well-being are a priority. ‘Our hearts go out to the Jewish community,’ she said, calling the act ‘a despicable act.’ Smith also emphasized the importance of celebrating the High Holy Days with peace and happiness, noting that an arrest has been made. Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell praised the collaborative efforts between his department and Punta Gorda police, asserting that the community is safe and protected. ‘We do not sit idly by; we take immediate action to make sure our community knows they are safe,’ he said, highlighting the commitment to uphold the rights and safety of all residents.
