Palestinian President Abbas Slams Israel’s ‘Genocide’ at UN General Assembly

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations General Assembly, denouncing Israel’s actions in Gaza as ‘genocide.’ He emphasized his party’s commitment to leading the region with security and governance, without Hamas’s influence. Abbas also called for full UN membership for Palestine, stating his support for Israel’s right to exist, as affirmed in 1988 and 1993. The speech followed recent international moves, including the recognition of a Palestinian state by several European nations and ongoing military escalation by Israel in Gaza.

During his address, Abbas highlighted the PA’s readiness to take full responsibility for Gaza, ensuring Hamas would have no control over the territory. He stressed the need for a modern, peaceful state free from violence and extremism, dedicated to development and education. At the same time, he asserted Jerusalem as the ‘eternal capital’ for Palestinians, a stance that has long been a point of contention. His remarks were met with widespread applause, reflecting the deep sentiment among the international community and the Palestinian population.

Abbas’s speech also took place in the context of broader geopolitical dynamics, including former President Donald Trump’s proposed peace plan and the ongoing UN efforts to implement a two-state solution. He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposals for a ‘Greater Israel,’ a concept that he strongly opposes. While Abbas rejected the October 7 attacks by Hamas, which he claimed do not represent the broader Palestinian people, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive ceasefire and international support to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The international community faces immense pressure to find a sustainable resolution to the conflict, with tensions continuing to escalate on both sides.

As Israel expands its military operations in Gaza, the situation remains volatile, with both sides facing growing scrutiny on the global stage. The UN’s role in mediating peace efforts has been questioned, with Abbas pointing out that numerous resolutions have been passed without meaningful results. Nevertheless, the international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a diplomatic breakthrough that would address the complex and deeply rooted issues in the region.
