Connecticut Mother Charged with Attempted Murder After Allegedly Poisoning Husband with Antifreeze

A 33-year-old mother in Ridgefield, Connecticut, Kristen Hogan, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly poisoning her husband with antifreeze during their bitter child custody battle. According to the Connecticut State Police, Hogan was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of attempted murder and a charge of interfering with an officer. The husband, who is not named in court documents, allegedly became increasingly ill after consuming a small amount of wine stored in his refrigerator.

The incident began when the husband was in court on August 7, awaiting a hearing regarding their child’s custody. During this time, he received a notification that his wife, who was not present, was uploading data to the Wi-Fi router at his home. Upon returning home, he found her absent. The next day, he consumed a small amount of wine from his fridge but woke up in the middle of the night feeling increasingly ill. By 6 a.m., his mother arrived to find him slurring words, staggering, and vomiting, prompting an emergency hospital visit.

Medical professionals ruled out a stroke but suspected poisoning by ethylene glycol, the key ingredient in antifreeze. After testing the wine, authorities confirmed the presence of the toxic substance. The husband revealed that Hogan had access to his home and was likely the last person to be there before he consumed the wine. This discovery led to her arrest and subsequent charges.

Detectives also found on Hogan’s phone searches related to chemical compounds, including monoethylene glycol, and how much of them could be lethal. Although she initially denied the poisoning, she eventually admitted to putting ethylene glycol in her husband’s wine bottle, claiming her intention was to make him sick as payback for his alleged mental abuse. Their child, hospitalized earlier in September, presented similar symptoms, further implicating Hogan in the poisoning incident.

Authorities believe the motive for the poisoning was related to the custody battle, as the husband suspected that by poisoning him, Hogan would gain full ownership of their home and custody of their child. Hogan has been held on a $1 million bond pending further legal proceedings.
