Oleksandr Alferov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINP), has called for renaming the term ‘kopiika’ to ‘shag’ to reflect historical Ukrainian usage. He argues that the name ‘shag’ was used in present-day Ukraine since the 17th century and was specifically Ukrainian, while ‘kopiika’ originated in Moscow in the 16th century and denotes a purely ruble zone. Alferov notes that the kopeck accidentally became a currency coin for the hryvnia, which has been a marker of Ukrainian identity since the Middle Ages and during the times of the UNR. More than 100 years ago, the hryvnia had a unit of exchange ‘shag,’ a name that has been used in the territory since the 17th century and remained Ukrainian even during the time of Ukraine’s enslavement by empires.
