Ukraine’s Culture Ministry has announced that the ‘YeKnyha’ initiative, launched to promote literacy and cultural development among youth, has surpassed its initial targets, reaching more than 200,000 young readers. The program, which provides financial assistance for book purchases, has seen remarkable success as it now serves a significant portion of the country’s adolescent population. This initiative, part of broader efforts to enhance educational outcomes and cultural engagement, is being lauded for its role in fostering a reading culture amid the ongoing challenges faced by the nation.
The initial phase of the program, running from January to September 2025, allocated a total of Hr 181.9 million in subsidies for book purchases, with a focus on 18-year-olds. These funds have been used to support the acquisition of a diverse range of books, including literature, educational materials, and contemporary fiction. The government’s investment in this program reflects a growing recognition of the importance of education and cultural enrichment in shaping the future of Ukraine.
As the program continues to expand, stakeholders hope to see even greater participation and a long-term impact on literacy rates. The success of the ‘YeKnyha’ initiative also underscores the potential of public policy in driving cultural and educational change. With the support of the Culture Ministry and other government agencies, the program is expected to play a pivotal role in the development of Ukraine’s youth and the promotion of a lifelong love of reading.
