A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the southern Philippines on Friday, setting off tsunami warnings and forcing residents in coastal areas to flee to higher ground.
Official sources confirmed that at least two people were killed in Mati City, located in Davao Oriental province. The devastation included collapsed buildings, cracked roads, and significant power outages in affected districts. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene to assess the damage and provide assistance to those impacted.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located east of Manay in Dava, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and the US Tsunami Warning System issued warnings of potential tsunami waves up to one meter above normal tides. These warnings prompted immediate action from local authorities, who advised residents to move to safer locations and monitor for any further tremors.
