Kyivstar and Mastercard to Test Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Tech in Payments

Kyivstar, Ukraine’s largest mobile operator, is set to partner with Mastercard to explore the integration of Starlink Direct-to-Cell satellite technology into payment systems. This collaboration, formalized through a one-year cooperation memorandum with an option for extension, aims to enhance the reliability and accessibility of financial services, particularly in remote or conflict-affected areas.

The initiative, which is part of broader efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s digital infrastructure, is expected to provide critical financial services to underserved populations. By leveraging satellite technology, the partnership seeks to overcome limitations posed by traditional terrestrial networks, which may be disrupted in regions experiencing conflict or natural disasters.

Mastercard, a global leader in payment solutions, brings its extensive experience in financial technology and secure transaction processing to the partnership. Kyivstar’s expertise in mobile communications and network infrastructure complements Mastercard’s capabilities, creating a robust framework for testing and implementing satellite-based payment systems.

According to the cooperation memorandum, the one-year testing phase will focus on evaluating the scalability, security, and efficiency of the Direct-to-Cell technology in real-world scenarios. Success in this phase could lead to a longer-term partnership, with the potential to expand the technology’s application across Ukraine and beyond.

This development marks a significant step in the integration of satellite communications with financial services, highlighting the potential of emerging technologies to address critical infrastructure gaps. As Kyivstar and Mastercard navigate the complexities of this innovative project, their collaboration underscores the growing importance of resilient digital ecosystems in today’s interconnected world.
