Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry Promotes ‘Louisiana Lockup’ as New Migrant Detention Facility

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has launched a public awareness campaign for the ‘Louisiana Lockup,’ a new migrant detention facility established within a maximum-security prison. The ad targets individuals engaging in illegal or criminal activities by emphasizing the facility as a consequence for those who persist in such actions. The plan aims to consolidate the most dangerous criminal migrants into a single location, removing them from the general population and disrupting their criminal operations.

In a recent appearance on ‘America Reports,’ Landry directly communicated to migrants that if they continue to commit illegal activities, they face the prospect of being detained at this facility, which is intended to serve as a deterrent for such actions. The facility’s strategic goal is to house the most dangerous offenders in a centralized location, thereby reducing their ability to operate within communities and disrupting their criminal enterprises.

Landry’s initiative is part of a broader effort by Republican-led states to address the issue of illegal immigration, with Florida having already opened its own migrant detention facility, ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ earlier in 2025. However, the Florida facility has faced legal challenges, and a recent federal appeals court decision temporarily halted a lower court’s order to shut it down.

The Louisiana facility has come under scrutiny over claims of detainee mistreatment and a reported hunger strike. In response, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied these claims, asserting that the facility houses some of the most serious offenders, including 26 child predators, 20 sex offenders, and 28 murderers. DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that these allegations represent unsubstantiated misinformation, and the facility remains a critical component of the nation’s immigration enforcement strategy.
