A 53-year-old staff member at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts, tragically died after being struck in the chest by a 14-year-old student during an alleged altercation at the school’s dormitory. The incident occurred when the student attempted to leave the dormitory without permission, prompting staff, including Amy Morrell, to intervene. Morrell collapsed and was transported to the hospital, where she remained overnight in critical condition. The following day, she was pronounced dead, with authorities yet to release the official cause of death.
The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, along with Swansea Police, is currently investigating the matter. The 14-year-old student has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and was arraigned in Fall River Juvenile Court. The school, which serves youths aged 12 to 21 with behavioral, mental health, or trauma-related challenges, has experienced past scrutiny from the Disability Law Center, which noted instances of abuse and neglect between 2014 and 2016.
