Nick Saban Attributes Coaching Firings to Financial Pressures in College Football

Former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has blamed the money handlers for the spate of coaching firings in college football during the 2025 season. Several programs, including the Florida Gators and Penn State Nittany Lions, axed their head coaches in mid-season, sparking discussions about the role of financial pressures in institutional decision-making.

Saban, a legendary figure in college football, argued that the current state of the sport is to blame for the instability. He pointed to the growing financial demands for player compensation as a key factor, suggesting that the pressure on athletic directors is increasing due to the influence of donors and fans. “Everybody’s raising money to pay players,” Saban told ESPN, noting that the people funding the programs now have a say in how they’re managed. “When they get frustrated and disappointed, they put pressure on the (athletic directors) to take action, and it’s the way of the world,” he said.

Saban criticized the current model for prioritizing financial incentives over the development of student-athletes. He emphasized the importance of creating a system that not only produces winning programs but also ensures that players receive a proper education and quality of life. “College football still needs to find a way to improve the quality of life of players while also developing them and giving them a proper education,” he said, highlighting a long-standing challenge in the sport.

The firings of coaches like Billy Napier and James Franklin have drawn attention to the growing disconnect between the financial aspects of college football and the educational mission. Saban expressed particular concern about Franklin’s dismissal, citing the success he had at Penn State. “I think Franklin’s dismissal was unfair,” Saban noted, given the consistent performance and progress under his leadership.

As more coaches are expected to be let go during the upcoming offseason, the issue has intensified discussions about the future of college football. With the financial model placing increasing demands on programs, there is a growing call for systemic reforms to ensure the sport remains sustainable for both athletes and coaching staff.
