Washington Post Criticizes Karine Jean-Pierre’s Book as ‘Therapy-Speak’ and Criticizes Democratic Party

The Washington Post’s book critic, Becca Rothfeld, launched a scathing review of former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s memoir, *Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines*, which she described as full of ‘squishy and congratulatory therapy-speak.’ Rothfeld criticized the book for centering on personal grievances rather than offering substantial policy critiques, calling it an ‘artifact of an age’ that feels ‘prehistor,ic.’

The memoir defends Joe Biden and criticizes the Democratic Party’s treatment of him and other members, but Rothfeld argued Jean-Pierre failed to address pressing issues like support for Israel, opposition to Trump, and immigration reform. Instead, she focused on the party’s ‘sensible’ decision to remove Biden from the 2024 race, which Rothfeld dismissed as a mere ‘rhetorical tactic.’

The critic also mocked Jean-Pierre’s shift to independent status as more about style than substance, accusing her of promoting ‘feel-good’ clichés akin to a Soul Cycle instructor. Jean-Pierre’s representatives have not yet commented on the review.
