A web browser marketed as providing enhanced privacy, the Universe Browser, has been found to route all internet traffic through servers in China and covertly install background programs resembling malware, according to research by Infoblox. The browser, connected with Chinese online gambling websites, has been downloaded millions of times. The security findings highlight its potential association with cybercrime networks, including money laundering and human trafficking, as it is directly linked to BBIN, a major online gambling company since 1999. Infoblox, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, uncovered links between the browser and Southeast Asia’s cybercrime ecosystem, which involves activities such as illegal online gambling, human trafficking, and scam operations using forced labor. The browser’s Windows version includes features like location and language checks upon launch, installs two browser extensions, and disables security measures such as sandboxing.
