Tragic Crash in California: High School Coach and Wife Among Victims, Illegal Immigrant Driver Charged

A devastating truck crash on the I-10 Freeway in San Bernardino County, California, has claimed the lives of Pomona High School basketball coach Clarence Nelson, 76, and his wife, Lisa Nelson, 69, as well as another victim. The incident, which left three people dead and several others injured, is under investigation for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. The driver, identified as Jashanpreet Singh, an illegal immigrant from India, was released by the Biden administration in 2022 and is now accused of causing the crash through negligence and impairment.

Authorities have confirmed that Singh failed to brake before plowing into a traffic jam, citing toxicology tests that showed impairment. State Senator Susan Rubio expressed profound grief over the incident, emphasizing its impact on the school community and the broader society, while urging support for the families of the victims. The crash also highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of immigrant truck drivers in the United States, with similar incidents reported in Florida where another illegal immigrant driver is also under investigation for causing a fatal crash.

The incident is the latest involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in the U.S. In a separate case, Harjinder Singh — who crossed the southern border illegally in 2018 — obtained a commercial driver’s license in California and was accused of causing a crash in August in Fort Pierce, Florida, that killed three people. Officials investigating that wreck said he failed English-language and road sign tests. The crash follows the Trump administration’s announcement last week that it would withhold more than $40 million in federal highway safety funding from California for failing to comply with federal English-language proficiency standards for truck drivers.
