Ukrainian Defense Minister Shmyhal Meets with Portuguese Defense Minister to Discuss PURL and SAFE Initiatives

Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal recently held a bilateral meeting with his Portuguese counterpart, Nuno Melo, to discuss significant military cooperation initiatives. The meeting, which took place in a virtual format, focused on two key areas: Portugal’s potential participation in the Purchase of American Weapons for Ukraine (PURL) initiative and the implementation of joint projects under the SAFE (Security and Defense Cooperation) program.

The PURL initiative, launched by the United States, aims to provide Ukraine with advanced weaponry and military equipment to bolster its defense against Russian aggression. Shmyhal emphasized the importance of international support, particularly from NATO allies, in ensuring Ukraine’s security. Portugal’s potential involvement in this program would mark a significant step in the country’s contribution to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Regarding the SAFE program, the ministers discussed prospects for collaborative projects that could enhance both nations’ security capabilities. SAFE is designed to facilitate joint defense initiatives, including the sharing of intelligence, joint training exercises, and the development of defensive technologies. Melo expressed interest in exploring areas where Portugal and Ukraine could work together to strengthen regional security and stability.

This meeting underscores the growing strategic partnership between Ukraine and Portugal, as well as the broader coalition of international allies supporting Ukraine’s defense. Both ministers reiterated their commitment to advancing these initiatives and strengthening bilateral ties in the face of ongoing global security challenges.
