Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson has enthusiastically endorsed quarterback J.J. McCarthy, the team’s first-round draft pick, highlighting his work ethic and potential for success in the NFL. In an interview at the fifth annual Tight End University (TEU), Hockenson expressed his belief that McCarthy has the attributes needed to thrive at the professional level. ‘He is one of the best people I have been around,’ Hockenson said, noting McCarthy’s hunger to learn and his dedication to excellence.
McCarthy, the Michigan Wolverines’ star quarterback, missed the entire 2023 season with a torn meniscus, raising questions about his readiness for the NFL. However, Hockenson is confident that McCarthy has the ‘switch’ to perform under pressure, a trait that separates elite quarterbacks from others. ‘You don’t really notice that when you’re just hanging out and talking with him,’ Hockenson explained, but ‘he really wants it. He really wants everything to be perfect, and he’s a perfectionist for sure, which is awesome.’ This mindset, Hockenson believes, is essential for success in the NFL.
The Vikings’ coaching staff, led by head coach Kevin O’Connell, have been vocal about their support for McCarthy as their long-term quarterback. Despite the team exploring other options, including potential trades or free-agent signings, they have remained committed to developing McCarthy through their system. This approach mirrors the success of Sam Darnold, who thrived under O’Connell’s guidance last season. Hockenson sees McCarthy as a valuable asset to the team, stating, ‘I want to be there every step of the way to help him navigate and help him become who he can be on and off the field.’
In addition to his on-field praise, Hockenson highlighted McCarthy’s ‘insane’ arm talent, which some critics questioned during his college days. However, Hockenson believes McCarthy’s arm strength, combined with his mental discipline, will make him an effective NFL quarterback. ‘He’s got that switch,’ Hockenson noted, ‘he turns that on when he gets on the field. The ball zips on you and he can spin it. It’s been a lot of fun to see him in OTAs, and I can’t wait to get out there with him in camp and throughout the season.’
Cutting through the hype, Hockenson remains focused on the future, emphasizing the importance of preparation and teamwork. ‘Coming here and having all the guys, it’s good to be around Travis, be around George,’ he said, referring to NFL stars Travis Kelce and George Kittle. ‘To see some of the guys off the field, and really make the connection, really meet them outside of football it’s a lot of fun. So that’s what I try to get out of it every year.’ Hockenson’s commitment to both football and camaraderie underscores his role as a key player for the Vikings, as he looks forward to supporting McCarthy’s journey in the NFL.
