Earlier this month, a 22-year-old man, Daniel Waterman, succumbed to injuries from a fatal car crash that occurred months prior. However, Waterman’s final moments were marked by a critical revelation: he allegedly told police from his hospital bed that his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, intentionally caused the crash, which resulted in his death.
The incident took place in Flagler County, Florida, during the Super Bowl weekend in February. Mumby, who was 24 at the time, was driving the vehicle that Waterman, a passenger, was in. The collision led to severe injuries, with Waterman suffering critical harm that led to his death on October 8. His family and friends expressed their loss, particularly as Waterman was on the cusp of becoming a father.
Waterman’s mother shared that he had initially been in a coma following the crash but eventually regained consciousness, allowing him to provide crucial information to investigators. He reportedly told police that Mumby had expressed a desire for revenge, stating, ‘I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve,’ before the crash occurred.
Authorities charged Mumby with reckless driving causing serious injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in July. However, following Waterman’s death, the charges were escalated to vehicular homicide. Mumby, who was found to be pregnant with Waterman’s child at the time, has since given birth, adding a layer of tragedy to an already devastating situation.
The legal battle continues with Mumby having been released from the Flagler County Jail after posting a $150,000 bond. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges. A GoFundMe campaign initiated in Waterman’s name highlighted his excitement for his upcoming role as a father, underscoring the personal and emotional impact of the tragedy on those involved.
