Mozambique: IS-linked Group Linked to Mass Child Kidnappings

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused the Islamist group al-Shabab of abducting hundreds of children in Mozambique this year, with victims being forced into combat, labor, or marriage. The report highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis as the conflict escalates, with local communities struggling to safeguard their children.

Al-Shabab, which is linked to the Islamic State (IS), has been active in Mozambique’s northern regions, where it has carried out attacks on government forces and civilian targets. The group’s activities have drawn international condemnation, with HRW calling for increased efforts to protect vulnerable populations and hold perpetrators accountable.

The situation has raised concerns about the safety of children in conflict zones, particularly in Africa, where similar incidents have been reported. HRW’s findings underscore the urgent need for humanitarian aid and diplomatic intervention to address the root causes of the violence and protect civilian lives.
