Iranian hackers have taunted former National Security Advisor John Bolton with threats to leak classified files obtained from his email account, according to an unsealed search warrant affidavit reviewed by Fox News Digital. The hackers, believed to be linked to Iran, mocked Bolton as ‘Mr. Mustache’ and allegedly sent threatening emails to his assistant, warning of potential leaks. Bolton, who pleaded not guilty to charges of mishandling classified information, had been indicted on 18 counts related to the improper handling of such materials.
The revelations came after a series of emails from Bolton’s assistant alerted the FBI to the breach, prompting a raid on his home in September 2021. The unsealed warrant detailed Bolton’s attempts to reinstall a SCIF in his home and the subsequent revocation of his access to classified materials. Additionally, the FBI’s investigation highlighted Bolton’s alleged transmission of top-secret information to unauthorized individuals, including details about foreign military actions and intelligence operations.
Bolton’s assistant reported the hack in July 2021, and he was indicted in October on 18 charges related to the improper handling of classified documents. The case has sparked significant political debate, with the Biden administration halting the inquiry for political reasons, according to a senior official. The situation has further complicated Bolton’s legal and political standing, particularly given his history with Trump and the ongoing threats from Iran.
