Uganda-Born Socialist Zohran Mamdani Elected New York City Mayor

Progressive Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani is expected to become the next mayor of New York City, according to preliminary election results. With over 90% of ballots counted, Mamdani leads his rival, former governor Andrew Cuomo, 50% to 41%, while Republican Curtis Sliwa receives just over 7%. The election, which saw more than two million voters cast ballots, marks the highest turnout for a New York mayoral race since 1969.

Mamdani’s campaign, which positions him as a champion of social justice and economic reform, has energized younger voters who support his progressive platforms on housing affordability and wealth taxation. However, his socialist views have drawn sharp criticism from moderates and Republicans, who have labeled him a ‘communist’ for advocating policies they see as radical.

The election has also drawn national attention, with former President Donald Trump publicly endorsing Cuomo and threatening to withhold federal funds from the city if Mamdani wins. This dramatic intervention has intensified the political stakes, with Cuomo vowing to hold the incoming administration accountable despite his loss.
