Houston Police Union Targets NYPD Officers Amid Zohran Mamdani’s Mayoral Victory

Following the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor of New York City, the Houston Police Officers’ Union has launched a recruitment campaign targeting ‘disgusted’ NYPD officers, citing concerns over Mamdani’s socialist policies and rhetoric against the police force.

The union’s social media post on X called on NYPD officers to consider relocating to Houston, highlighting the perceived negative impact of Mamdani’s leadership on law enforcement in New York. Texas Governor Greg Abbott humorously suggested a tariff on NYC residents moving to Texas, reflecting the political and cultural shift.

President of the Houston Police Officers’ Union, Douglas Griffith, stated that socialism is harmful for law enforcement in New York City, urging officers to seek better opportunities in Houston. The union emphasized Houston’s lower cost of living and supportive environment for law enforcement as incentives for NYPD officers to relocate.

The union’s campaign includes flyers outlining benefits such as a ‘36.5% pay raise over five years,’ affordable housing, and supportive citizens. The NYPD has not yet responded to requests for comment, while the mayor-elect, Mamdani, has previously called the NYPD a ‘racist, anti-queer and major threat to public safety,’ raising concerns about the future of law enforcement in New York.
